What is Kerosene?

Kerosene Oil is...

Also known as Kerosene 28, Kero, home heating oil, 28 second oil or ‘Boiler Juice’ and is the UK’s most common heating fuel for homes that are not connected to the main gas grid.

Typically more cost-effective and efficient than other alternative fuels, it is a popular choice for off-grid homeowners, with most modern oil-fired boilers running on Kerosene as opposed to Gas Oil.

Kerosene 28 is commonly known as 'Home Heating Oil' or 'Domestic Oil'.

It is a light, thin, straw-coloured liquid.

Before electricity was widely available, Kerosene was used in lanterns throughout the UK.

Kerosene is a non-corrosive fuel and when stored correctly, can last for years.

How is Domestic Kerosene Made?

In the past, Kerosene was extracted from fuels such as fossilised wood, coal and oil shale, however, modern Kerosene is a by-product of crude oil and is created from the distillation of petroleum.

The Advantages of Using Kerosene 28

While some fossil fuels can be expensive to produce, Kerosene is one of the cheapest. In fact, compared to other off-grid fuels, Kerosene is one of the most cost-effective ways to heat your home.*

As Kerosene is a popular fuel for off-grid homes, there are a wide range of Kerosene suppliers across the country. This means that you are more likely to be able to compare prices in your area to find the best deal for your oil.

When stored and used correctly, Kerosene oil should not produce any soot, dirt or odours. It also burns very cleanly and has a low risk of Carbon Monoxide emissions.

Kerosene is extremely efficient, which means that it typically releases more heat than other heating fuels. The estimated efficiency level of domestic Kerosene is 90%, compared to gas at approx. 77% and electricity at 31%.

Environmental Benefits

As well as producing less fumes than fuels such as wood or coal, domestic Kerosene deliveries are often grouped to reduce the amount of tanker deliveries in an area, which in turn cuts CO2 emissions.
