BoilerJuice is a UK-based ecommerce energy site running a LAMP stack on AWS. We are looking for an experienced PHP Full Stack Dev Lead to join our growing technology team. This is a new role, reporting to the CTO, where you will be managing a team of 3-4 developers whilst also being hands-on with coding and architecture.

Our current team come from a range of backgrounds and work mostly in JavaScript, PHP, Bash & SQL. You will already be comfortable in object-oriented PHP and modern JavaScript coding. It’s likely you will also be comfortable on the Linux command line (possibly including some experience with Bash shell scripts). We have some automation in place for testing (chiefly PHPUnit), deployments and so forth, but aspire to have a lot more – including using the likes of Selenium and getting to proper CI/CD.

Although we are expecting you to have some good experience under your belt, we don’t have a long shopping list of specific technologies or frameworks that you need to know. It’s more important for us to hire for ability, aptitude and attitude than for specific bits of knowledge that you’ll be able to pick up soon enough.

Our Tech Stack

  • AWS hosted
  • LAMP stack with a HTML 5 / BootStrap front-end and Amazon RDS database
  • Smartphone Apps built on Apache Cordova (formerly PhoneGap)
  • CMS built upon Silex with Symfony components (but soon to be replaced by Bolt)
  • Common API for Web Site and Smartphone Apps
  • Convert.com is our current testing tool/SessionCam for customer insights

Most of the tools we use are cloud-based (Jira, Confluence, BitBucket, Apiary, Slack) but it is only relatively recently that we have moved our main sites to AWS from Rackspace dedicated hosting. We are already using some of the more advanced AWS features, in particular Lambda functions, but there is further work to do to make our platform as seamlessly scalable and resilient as we would like.

Methodology

Our current methodology is agile Kanban (using Jira, Confluence, BitBucket) with two-week sprints. We are pragmatic about methodology; we want the teams to own and understand it, so that it works as a tool for prioritisation and delivery, without becoming an end in its own right. We are always looking to improve the way we work.

About us…

Although you may not have heard of BoilerJuice, we are an established company with a proven business model and a solid customer base. We are different from a lot of other ecommerce businesses because the logistics for delivering what we sell (domestic heating oil) are a bit more complicated than for many other products you can buy online!

We are investing for further growth, but this is not just scaling up to do more-of-the-same. We are also creating new products that combine Internet-of-Things with smart data analysis to change the way a market works. That means working on both the customer side (web/app improvements and launching new products and propositions) and the supplier side (system integrations, innovative ways of managing a competitive marketplace) in parallel. Whilst we’re excited about what we do, we like to think we’re relatively down-to-earth. We don’t have a big hierarchy, a special dress code, or a company song about heating oil.

The business is profitable and is investing for growth; through increased market share in the UK, product enhancement and international expansion.

In this role, you will…

  • Line manage, and act as scrum-master for, a team of 3-4 developers
  • Be a hands-on senior developer – scoping & estimating work, writing code, investigating & fixing bugs, actively participating in architecture discussions with the CTO
  • Work closely with product and marketing folks on prioritisation trade-offs – including explaining “technical debt” issues in lay terms so they don’t get omitted from those discussions
  • Work on both web and smartphone app development
  • Collaborate with QA and Systems Engineering folks in a DevOps style of working
  • Help data analysts understand and extract information from the system
  • With the rest of the team, build our next generation products
  • Not have to learn any company songs

You'll have…

  • Several years writing & supporting production web applications in an agile environment using object-oriented PHP, JavaScript and jQuery (or a similar JS library)
  • Familiarity with a variety of types of testing and tools (eg PHPUnit, Cucumber, Selenium)
  • Experience in mentoring and coaching other developers
  • The ability to express yourself clearly both in meetings and in writing

The reward

  • Salary: Dependent on skills and experience
  • Bonus: Up to 10% of your salary

BoilerJuice is a UK-based ecommerce energy site running a LAMP stack on AWS. We are looking for an experienced Linux Cloud Systems Engineer to join our growing technology team. This is a new role, reporting to the CTO, where you will be working closely with our existing development team in a DevOps model.

Our current team come from a range of backgrounds and work mostly in JavaScript, PHP, Bash & SQL. It’s likely you are already comfortable in Bash and at least one other scripting language (eg Python, PHP, Perl). We have some automation in place for deployments and so forth, but aspire to have a lot more – something that, as Systems Engineer, you will be heavily involved in.

Although we are expecting you to have some good experience under your belt, we don’t have a long shopping list of specific technologies or frameworks that you need to know. It’s more important for us to hire for ability, aptitude and attitude than for specific bits of knowledge that you’ll be able to pick up soon enough.

The main focus of the role is supporting our production (and related) environments. You will also get involved in standards and support for desktops & telephony, but this won’t take up much of your time. (A good proportion of the forty or so people in the company – including all the tech team and most of senior management – use Macs, though we do still have a few folks on Windows.)

Similarly, although there is a need to participate in an out-of-hours on-call rota, we work hard to ensure our systems are sufficiently resilient and scalable that it is very unlikely that people get called on evenings or weekends.
