Boilerjuice is a UK-based ecommerce energy site. We are looking for a highly analytical Performance Marketing specialist to scale and optimise our digital marketing channels.

This is a key role in the Marketing team reporting directly to the CMO, with autonomy to drive growth across Performance Marketing channels.

About us…

You might not know that over 1.5 million UK households aren’t connected to mains gas, instead having to top up their tank with regular deliveries or risk running out of heating oil. In 2004, a group of friends founded BoilerJuice, a new online service designed to help consumers find the best heating oil price in their area, quickly and easily. Back then, we broke new ground as the UK’s first price comparison service and a pure play online business in a traditional sector. Today, we’re the UK’s number one heating oil marketplace. Independent and impartial, we deliver oil to thousands of UK households every week, saving them time and money. In 2017, we celebrated a volume milestone: one billion litres delivered, and counting…

We’re an established company with a proven business model and a solid customer base. We are different from a lot of other ecommerce businesses because the logistics for delivering what we sell (domestic heating oil) are a bit more complicated than for many other products you can buy online!

We are investing for further growth, but this is not just scaling up to do more-of-the-same. We are also creating new products that combine Internet-of-Things with smart data analysis to change the way a market works.

While we’re excited about what we do, we like to think we’re relatively down-to-earth. We don’t have a big hierarchy, a special dress code, or a company song about heating oil.

In this role, you will…

  • Lead our Performance Marketing to:
  • Acquire new customers
  • Drive qualified visitors to our website and apps
  • Re-engage visitors who don’t convert so that they convert down the line
  • Manage all our Performance Marketing channels (PPC, Affiliate Marketing, Display, Re-marketing, Paid Social)
  • Develop the strategy and plan
  • Create and manage campaigns across all channels, including developing a clear structure for BoilerJuice PPC campaigns, ad groups and keywords
  • Build custom audiences at an advanced level, e.g. for RLSA use
  • Constantly test and learn across all activity to optimise ROI
  • Seek out new and effective ways of driving growth
  • Own the tracking and evaluation of success of all Performance Marketing
  • Own the tracking solution and ensure that we can track, de-dupe and evaluate all sales, including working closely with analytics colleagues to produce attribution analysis
  • Own the reporting of campaigns, across all KPIs, to maximise ROI
  • Generate performance insights via the use of analytical tools (mainly Google Analytics)
  • Work closely with our design, SEO and development teams to develop quality landing pages
  • Forecast and manage the Performance Marketing budget, working closely with our Finance team
  • Act as an expert to communicate market news with key stakeholders

You'll have…

We are looking for a highly commercially aware team player with a self-starter approach and able to demonstrate a track record of success in Digital Acquisition Marketing.

You’ll enjoy building relationships and being part of a performance driven team.

  • Certified with both Google AdWords and Bing Ads
  • Proficient in the use of Google AdWords and Bing Ads and able to use the Google AdWords Editor
  • Strong knowledge of A/B testing
  • Highly numerate and analytically minded – able to translate analysis into action to boost future performance
  • Demonstrable experience running successful campaigns within budget
  • Graduate level education ideally with a Digital Marketing qualification
  • Ideally with:
  • A basic understanding of the use of scripts and business data
  • Basic knowledge of Google Tag Manager

The reward

  • Great place to work
  • Competitive salary with annual bonus and eligibility for our planned Long Term Incentive Plan
  • Bonus: Up to 10% of your salary and a Long Term Incentive Plan
  • BUPA Healthcare on completion of probation
  • Company and personal pension contribution
  • 25 days holiday a year
  • Subsidised gym membership

Location – this role will either be based in our London office in Farringdon or in our office in St Ives (near Huntingdon) but will involve some travel to the other location.

BoilerJuice is a UK-based ecommerce energy site. We are looking for a contract Project Manager to support our implementation of the new EU Directive on General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) on a part-time basis for an initial period of six months. This is a new interim role, reporting to our Chief Marketing Officer and working closely with other senior stakeholders. You will be responsible for our GDPR programme across the whole business.

We started working a few months ago on a project to bring our terms of business, processes and systems into line with the new GDPR requirements. Although we have made useful progress, we need some additional bandwidth to get the project running at the pace we all aspire to. We therefore now need an experienced Project Manager with GDPR expertise to help manage this project through implementation.

In this role, you will…

  • Manage our GDPR programme across the business
  • Support managers across functional areas such as marketing, product management, finance and technology to ensure their functions meet key GDPR requirements by the May 2018 deadline
  • Create a detailed, but living, project plan for GDPR and drive the project forward through and around roadblocks
  • Track, report and communicate action items and key project milestones
  • Track third party deliverables and ensure that external dependencies are factored into project plans
  • Work with the technology team to plan the integration of third party solutions
  • Effectively communicate across functional areas and to executive management on project progress, issues and risks
  • Maintain project issues and risk logs and facilitate the resolution of issues and the mitigation of project risks
  • Troubleshoot, problem-solve, and negotiate compromises to make sure that roadblocks are anticipated and tackled to minimize impact to schedule, quality and functionality
  • Build strong relationships as required across the business

You'll have…

  • Proven experience successfully managing complex projects from inception to delivery
  • Good understanding of GDPR and other data protection legislation
  • Negotiation and consensus building skills – with the senior leadership team, developers, customers, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to interact constructively with cross-functional team members. Recognise and focus on critical path activities and instil that focus into others
  • Ability to work in fast paced, team oriented environment
  • Experience writing specifications and executing project plans from these documents
  • Flexible, ability to adapt to changing priorities and rapid change

The reward

BoilerJuice is a UK-based ecommerce energy site running a LAMP stack on AWS. We are looking for an experienced PHP Full Stack Dev Lead to join our growing technology team. This is a new role, reporting to the CTO, where you will be managing a team of 3-4 developers whilst also being hands-on with coding and architecture.

Our current team come from a range of backgrounds and work mostly in JavaScript, PHP, Bash & SQL. You will already be comfortable in object-oriented PHP and modern JavaScript coding. It’s likely you will also be comfortable on the Linux command line (possibly including some experience with Bash shell scripts). We have some automation in place for testing (chiefly PHPUnit), deployments and so forth, but aspire to have a lot more – including using the likes of Selenium and getting to proper CI/CD.

Although we are expecting you to have some good experience under your belt, we don’t have a long shopping list of specific technologies or frameworks that you need to know. It’s more important for us to hire for ability, aptitude and attitude than for specific bits of knowledge that you’ll be able to pick up soon enough.

Our Tech Stack

  • AWS hosted
  • LAMP stack with a HTML 5 / BootStrap front-end and Amazon RDS database
  • Smartphone Apps built on Apache Cordova (formerly PhoneGap)
  • CMS built upon Silex with Symfony components (but soon to be replaced by Bolt)
  • Common API for Web Site and Smartphone Apps
  • Convert.com is our current testing tool/SessionCam for customer insights

Most of the tools we use are cloud-based (Jira, Confluence, BitBucket, Apiary, Slack) but it is only relatively recently that we have moved our main sites to AWS from Rackspace dedicated hosting. We are already using some of the more advanced AWS features, in particular Lambda functions, but there is further work to do to make our platform as seamlessly scalable and resilient as we would like.

Methodology

Our current methodology is agile Kanban (using Jira, Confluence, BitBucket) with two-week sprints. We are pragmatic about methodology; we want the teams to own and understand it, so that it works as a tool for prioritisation and delivery, without becoming an end in its own right. We are always looking to improve the way we work.

About us…

Although you may not have heard of BoilerJuice, we are an established company with a proven business model and a solid customer base.

That means working on both the customer side (web/app improvements and launching new products and propositions) and the supplier side (system integrations, innovative ways of managing a competitive marketplace) in parallel. Whilst we’re excited about what we do, we like to think we’re relatively down-to-earth. We don’t have a big hierarchy, a special dress code, or a company song about heating oil.

More about us: the UK's Number 1 Heating Oil Marketplace

For the 1.5 million UK homes who depend on oil for heating and hot water, Boilerjuice makes life easier. We help hundreds of thousands of them get a better price and a more convenient service by connecting them impartially with nearly all of the suppliers in the market.

We provide a valuable service and this, coupled with our excellent customer services means that we have high levels of loyalty and have opportunities to extend our relationship.

The business is profitable and is investing for growth; through increased market share in the UK, product enhancement and international expansion.

In this role, you will…

  • Line manage, and act as scrum-master for, a team of 3-4 developers
  • Be a hands-on senior developer – scoping & estimating work, writing code, investigating & fixing bugs, actively participating in architecture discussions with the CTO
  • Work closely with product and marketing folks on prioritisation trade-offs – including explaining “technical debt” issues in lay terms so they don’t get omitted from those discussions
  • Work on both web and smartphone app development
  • Collaborate with QA and Systems Engineering folks in a DevOps style of working
  • Help data analysts understand and extract information from the system
  • With the rest of the team, build our next generation products
  • Not have to learn any company songs

You'll have…

  • Several years writing & supporting production web applications in an agile environment using object-oriented PHP, JavaScript and jQuery (or a similar JS library)
  • Familiarity with a variety of types of testing and tools (eg PHPUnit, Cucumber, Selenium)
  • Experience in mentoring and coaching other developers
  • The ability to express yourself clearly both in meetings and in writing

The reward

  • Salary: Dependent on skills and experience
  • Bonus: Up to 10% of your salary
  • Healthcare: BUPA (on completion of probation)
  • Pension: Company and personal contribution
  • Holiday: 25 days holiday a year
  • Gym: Subsidised gym membership

Location – this role will either be based in our London office near King's Cross, or in our office in St Ives (near Huntingdon) but will involve a small amount of travel to the other location.

BoilerJuice is a UK-based ecommerce energy site running a LAMP stack on AWS. We are looking for an experienced Linux Cloud Systems Engineer to join our growing technology team. This is a new role, reporting to the CTO, where you will be working closely with our existing development team in a DevOps model.

Our current team come from a range of backgrounds and work mostly in JavaScript, PHP, Bash & SQL. It’s likely you are already comfortable in Bash and at least one other scripting language (eg Python, PHP, Perl). We have some automation in place for deployments and so forth, but aspire to have a lot more – something that, as Systems Engineer, you will be heavily involved in.

Although we are expecting you to have some good experience under your belt, we don’t have a long shopping list of specific technologies or frameworks that you need to know. It’s more important for us to hire for ability, aptitude and attitude than for specific bits of knowledge that you’ll be able to pick up soon enough.

The main focus of the role is supporting our production (and related) environments. You will also get involved in standards and support for desktops & telephony, but this won’t take up much of your time. (A good proportion of the forty or so people in the company – including all the tech team and most of senior management – use Macs, though we do still have a few folks on Windows.)

Similarly, although there is a need to participate in an out-of-hours on-call rota, we work hard to ensure our systems are sufficiently resilient and scalable that it is very unlikely that people get called on evenings or weekends.

Our Tech Stack

  • AWS hosted
  • LAMP stack with a HTML5 /BootStrap front-end and Amazon RDS database
  • Smartphone Apps built on Apache Cordova (formerly PhoneGap)

We are already using some of the more advanced AWS features, in particular Lambda functions, but there is further work to do to make our platform as seamlessly scalable and resilient as we would like.

Beyond the usual networking, VPN and firewall kit that you would expect to find in many offices, our main on-site system is our Avaya IP Office phone system, which primarily used by our Customer Support team.

Methodology

Our current methodology is agile Kanban (using Jira, Confluence, BitBucket) with two-week sprints. We are pragmatic about methodology; we want the teams to own and understand it, so that it works as a tool for prioritisation and delivery, without becoming an end in its own right. • In collaboration with the rest of our 12-strong technology team, improve automation of deployment, monitoring and related processes
  • Work with the CTO and the development team to refine our tools, standards and procedures relating to information security and data protection. (We need to be ready for GDPR, whilst retaining our PCI DSS compliance.)
  • Own and manage our backup/restore procedures, disaster recovery plan and technical risks register
  • Identify opportunities for us to improve scalability and resilience
  • Support and configure our office firewalls, VPNs and networking equipment
  • Provide desktop/network support to non-technical members of staff based in London and St Ives (near Huntingdon)
  • Schedule and keep track of external pen testing and similar technical audits
  • Act as primary point of contact for technical issues with our Avaya IP Office phone system (primary support for which comes from BT)

You'll have…

  • A solid grasp of Linux fundamentals – ie you know how and why things work, not just “how to follow the recipe”!
