Police seek help over heating oil theft

20 January 2009

Police are appealing for the help of home heating oil customers in the Peterhead area after thieves made off with around 70,000 litres of the fuel from a storage depot.

Officers are looking to hear from anyone who may have been offered oil at a reduced rate following the theft, which took place some time between November 13th and December 19th.

"We are aware that the oil may be presented to local farmers for sale at a reduced price, under the pretence that it is surplus to the offshore industry's requirements," said Constable David Weir.

The theft has only recently been discovered by bosses at Direct Waste Management, who are now offering a reward of £10,000 for any information relating to the incident.

Home heating oil customers saw a national increase in the number of oil thefts following the summer price hikes, with thieves looking to exploit the high value of the fuel.

Despite the recent price falls, residents are still best advised to remain vigilant and ensure they keep oil tanks secure by increasing their security measures.
