NEA calls for fuel price reductions

NEA calls for fuel price reductions

21 November 2008

National Energy Action (NEA) has appealed to the energy supply industry to reduce the cost of fuel as soon as possible.

The organisation's warm homes campaigner Maria Wardrobe said it appreciates that it takes time for price reductions to kick in because the suppliers purchase their energy on the forward market.

"But our message would be to give customers an early Christmas present and to try and bring prices down before Christmas or the early part of 2009," she added.

Ms Wardrobe said NEA wants to see Alistair Darling put more money into the government's flagship energy-efficiency programme.

It also wants him to extend the winter fuel payments currently given to the elderly to other vulnerable groups who struggle to pay for their home heating oil, electricity or gas bills.

NEA has claimed there are over five million people living in fuel poverty across the UK and the number is expected to rise.
