Mild winter in store

26 September 2008

The coming winter is likely to be milder and drier than usual, according to a new report.

A seasonal forecast by the Met Office suggests that after a wet summer, Britons are likely to face a dry and warmer winter.

This is good news for heating oil customers, as crude oil prices in the US continue to rise alongside the costs of other fuel bills.

Help the Aged welcomed the news of a milder winter.

Dr James Goodwin, Help the Aged’s head of research, said: "The onset of winter causes significant anxiety among many older people."

The forecast would help policymakers adapt their strategies to ensure the negative effects of a cold winter didn't hurt too many people, he added.

Heating oil prices could rise in the coming months, as the value of crude oil continues grow in the US, with one expert suggesting prices could tip $150 (81.65) a barrel.
