Home heating oil prices up 80 per cent

17 September 2008

The price of domestic heating has surged up 80 per cent over the last year, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

In response, the paper is launching a campaign to compare the prices of consumer goods and fuel among different retailers in Belfast.

Price variations between shops can be as much as 157 per cent on the same items, reports the paper.

Focusing on energy, it says that heating oil prices are 80 per cent higher than last year, while the cost of fuelling cars has increased as petrol and diesel prices rise.

The article suggests that residents are looking at ways of cutting their fuel and heating oil bills.

An option available to customers could be to buy their fuel in bulk.

One in three homes in Northern Ireland was deemed to be in fuel poverty in 2006, according to a report by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.
