Heating oil customers urged to protect supplies from thieves
 12 Jun 2008
Domestic heating oil customers are being advised to secure supplies after a sharp rise in thefts sparked by soaring oil prices.
People living in rural communities who are often reliant on home heating oil to keep their homes warm are becoming more vulnerable to thieves as their supplies become more valuable.
Oil prices have doubled over the past year and the number of heating oil thefts has risen leaving many households worrying about thefts.
Residents of the village of Stillington, between York and Helmsley in North Yorkshire, live several miles from the nearest gas main and have to rely on heating oil supplies.
Domestic heating oil customer Steve Chamberlain told the York Press that the government needs to rethink its policy on fuel tax or explore other ways of cutting costs.
"There will come a point when we will have to take the drastic action to cut our consumption," he added.
Police in Northern Ireland have issued a warning to consumers following a number of recent thefts and attempted thefts. A house in Ballinamallard, Fermanagh, recently had around 400 gallons of oil stolen, the Fermanagh Herald reports.
