Rural communities warned about rising heating oil thefts
 06 Jun 2008
People living in rural communities are being warned about a sharp rise in the number of home heating oil thefts.
According to rural insurer NFU Mutual, theft of domestic heating oil is becoming a problem on many farms.
Farmers Weekly reports that soaring oil prices have led to more thefts of domestic heating oil from farms and advises consumers to install gates and floodlighting where possible and resite tanks behind buildings to deter thieves.
"Heating oil is liquid gold at 60p/litre. It really is at serious risk of being stolen," NFU Mutual spokesman Tim Price explained.
Reports suggest that some thieves have been breaking into oil tanks and causing damage to valves and padlocks, in addition to stealing fuel.
Oil tank specialist TankDepot advises home heating oil customers to recognise the value of fuel inside a tank, ensuring that they are not in public view from nearby pavements and roadways, have locks fitted and are protected by gates and security systems.
