Rural domestic heating oil thefts fuelled by high prices
 15 May 2008
Rapid increases in oil prices are causing growing concern among rural communities following a spate of heating oil thefts.
Police in rural parts of Britain have warned that they have seen a steep rise in heating oil thefts over the past few months, as oil prices have almost doubled within the space of a year.
Residents in rural areas are most at risk of thefts and are being warned to secure their heating oil supplies in order to deter criminals by taking simple measures such as restricting access to tanks and situating them within sight of occupied buildings.
Norfolk Police has reported that it received 28 reports of oil thefts in March this year alone, with thieves targeting oil supplies at farms, homes and other locations, the Lynn News reports.
Around one and a half million UK homes use heating oil and prices rose last week to more than £300 for 500 litres, with the cost of heating oil nearly doubling over the past 12 months.
