Report predicts oil prices will push petrol up
 06 May 2008
Petrol prices will soar to as much as £1.50 per litre in 2009, a new report forecasts.
Oil prices have pushed up the cost of petrol over the past few months and it now averages around £1.09 a litre in the UK.
According to price comparison website uSwitch.com, motorists are paying an estimated 25 per cent more to fill their tanks than they were 12 months ago.
It now costs drivers more than £61 each on average to fill the tanks of their cars and uSwitch expects the situation to worsen over the coming months, with the average cost of filling up reaching £84.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch, stated: "Unfortunately, the outlook for drivers is bleak. This latest blow could be enough to force some off the road altogether."
Oil futures surged again in Monday trading to a new record of more than $120 a barrel amid fears about the stability of supplies, a dip in the dollar against the euro and attacks against wells and pipelines in Nigeria.
Rising oil prices will also push up the cost of heating oil for customers, as energy bills continue to increase.
