Oftec offers tips to deter home heating oil thieves
 21 Apr 2008
The recent increase in home heating thefts has led to the Oil Firing Technical Association (Oftec) issuing advice for homeowners on how to deter thieves.
Home heating oil users should consider installing security lights on their property that are triggered by movement, and fitting padlocks to their oil tanks, the body told Pendle Today.
It advised homeowners to move their oil tanks to a visible spot on their land, as well as installing an intruder alarm.
Furthermore, any suspicious activity involving lorries or vans should be reported to the police, Oftec said.
Jeremy Hawksley, director general of the association, commented: "Usually it is only when people run out of oil that theft becomes apparent, but regularly making a note of your oil levels and taking simple preventative measures will help to make sure you are not the victim."
In related news, a record high of $117.05 (£59.04) a barrel has been hit by oil prices today.
