Alarm advised for home heating oil users
 15 Apr 2008
Home heating oil users may want to purchase an alarm to keep thieves at bay, the police have suggested.
An inexpensive infrared device could alert homeowners to someone entering their drive or land, Police Constable Pat Bailey from Norfolk's police crime prevention has told the Great Yarmouth Mercury.
The not-for-profit device may help home heating oil users tackle the issue of theft that has been an increasing problem in recent months.
Across Norfolk there have been 50 reported incidents of home heating oil theft in the past three month, with 28 of these crimes taking place in Breckland.
The local police have noticed that thieves are no longer just targeting farm oil tanks, but also oil tanks belonging to residents in rural locations.
PC Bailey suggested that oil price hikes has contributed to the crime wave, stating: "I have got oil heating at home and the 500 litres I have just had delivered cost £273, compared to £215 just before Christmas."
A new record high was set by oil prices last week, with values reaching $112.21 (£57.02) a barrel.
