Pipeline attack 'dampens oil prices'
 28 Mar 2008
A pipeline attack in Iraq is the likely cause of a dip in oil prices today.
In news which could affect those with home heating oil, values have slipped to $106.50 (£53.27) from highs of $108 a barrel reached yesterday.
The assault on the pipeline took place in Basra, which has coincided with a new Baghdad curfew as officials in the country attempt to curb any unrest in these areas.
However, the damage to the pipeline may not be as bad as first suspected.
"The [Iraqi] problem is not as serious as we thought," an analyst at Macquarie Research, David Johnson, told the BBC.
Oil prices had been hovering near the $100 a barrel mark earlier this week, although values increased by four dollars over Wednesday night due to demand pressures and stock levels.
Last week, oil prices soared to record highs, nearly reaching the $112 mark.
