Brits eye a greener 2008

Saving energy will be close to the top of many people's thoughts when they make their New Year's resolutions, the findings of a new survey suggest.

Research commissioned by financial services company Friends Provident found that old favourites such as giving up drinking and starting an exercise regime remain the most popular resolutions.

However, 22 per cent of those quizzed said they planned to take a few simple steps to live a greener life.

Reducing carbon emissions by switching to low-energy appliances and light bulbs and by turning off electrical items when they are not in use were among the most common green resolutions

Julia Dreblow, socially responsible investment marketing manager at Friends Provident, was pleased to hear that so many people have good intentions, commenting: "Without a doubt green issues will be on Brits' minds more than ever in 2008."

The Energy Saving Trust recommends fitting draught excluders and insulating the hot water tank as two of the cheapest and most effective methods of cutting energy wastage.
