Heating oil customers will be familiar with preparing for winter during the summer, as they are regularly advised to stock up on the fuel when prices are lower in the warmer months.

However, it is also important not to forget other money-saving measures such as draught-proofing and insulation.

Former head of the Energy Saving Trust Noel Williams said spaces where air can get in may not matter now, but they will when it is very cold and the wind is blowing in, the Carrick Times reports.

Not only will it feel chilly, but money will also be wasted on heating the home if it is all escaping through the walls and loft.

Mr Williams recommended fitting left insulation now as well as checking that cavity walls are appropriately cladded.

It comes after construction expert Ryan Notz also advocated investing in double glazing if at all possible.

"Most people actually think that heating water is the most expenses use of heat in the home, but it is actually the cost of heating the space that we live in," Mr Williams remarked.
