Project gets underway in Middlesbrough to make homes greener

A new £5 million project has been launched in Middlesbrough aimed at making homes greener, cutting carbon emission and reducing energy bills.

Work has begun on 1,100 houses in Gresham, with 30 streets affected, the Gazette Live reports.

Funding will come from the government's Community Energy Saving Programme and all the work will be delivered by non-profit organisation GoWarm.

Measures to be installed include external wall insulation, loft insulation, boiler replacements, heating controls and new heating systems, which could save residents up to £750 a year on home heating oil and other fuel bills.

GoWarm's Karen Hindhaugh said the work will be complete by October, adding: "This will make a massive difference. The work will not cause much disruption - it should take up to two days on each property."

External wall insulation could be well worth looking into for homeowners elsewhere, as it was recently recommended by green energy expert Richard Baines in an interview with the Guardian.
