Thousands of Britons braved the wet weather over the bank holiday weekend to take part in Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
However, they may be staying at home, buying heating oil and switching their radiators back on this week after forecasters predicted a return to autumnal temperatures.
The Met Office said temperatures are set to plummet over the next few days, with an average of 17 degrees C in England and only 14 degrees C in Scotland, well below June averages, the Mirror reports.
Heavy rain and gales in some areas - the result of the tail end of a storm coming from the Atlantic - will also have Britain feeling as though it has plunged back into autumn after scorching temperatures at the end of May.
"The unsettled weather is expected to remain into next week," said a Met Office spokesperson.
Although London battled on with its Jubilee flotilla and pageants over the weekend, participants could be seen on television struggling with the wind and rain, while many street parties all over the UK had to be cancelled or moved indoors.
