Britons 'should take precautions' to protect against rising fuel bills

It is vital for Britons to take precautions if they want to protect themselves against rising fuel prices, one expert has warned.

Annie Shaw, editor of financial advisory site CashQuestions.com, said it is not likely that there will be a trend of costs for things like gas, electricity and home heating oil going down in the foreseeable future.

"I think it is going to hit people very hard, but of course, it is a fact of life," she commented.

Although the weather may be warm at present, the expert recommended putting in energy saving measures now in order to be prepared for the autumn and winter months, which have been particularly chilly in recent years.

Ms Shaw said full insulation is a must, while efficient appliances will also help to consume less power.

"If you are an elderly person, make sure you look after yourself in your home, make sure you have got plenty of warm clothing," she commented.

Younger relatives could also help the elderly to take care of themselves and ensure they have green measures in place to mitigate against high utility bills.

Recent information from uSwitch.com warned that future increases in fuel prices "will see even more people seriously struggling to afford their bills".

Indeed, the elderly could be suffering already, with a poll carried out this month by Age UK showing that one in five over-60s now owes money on a mortgage, credit card or loan.

More than a third feel that their pension and savings income is not enough for a financially stable future, while 1.8 million pensioners are in poverty.

Heating bills are likely to be one of the biggest outgoings for the elderly, so it is vital to ensure they are not paying over the odds.

The Monthly Savings Scheme could also help by allowing users to put money aside in a Tank Account that can eventually be used on a fuel order, softening the blow of the next purchase.
