There are a number of different products on the market now that aim to provide peace of mind for homeowners by detecting carbon monoxide and sounding an alarm if levels of the poisonous substance get too high.
However, their owners have been warned that they should never be seen as a substitute for getting appliances serviced on a regular basis, whether they are powered by heating oil or other fuels.
David Bull from Trading Standards told the Loughborough Echo: "It is very important for a competent person such as a Gas Safety registered engineer to regularly service appliances like boilers, gas fires, water heaters or open fires."
He explained this will ensure that flues are not blocked and burners are properly adjusted so they function properly.
Leicestershire County Council also warned that it has come across some faulty carbon monoxide alarms.
Meanwhile, Anthony Kerrigan from a letting agency in Doncaster has called upon the government to make it a legal requirement for boiler manufacturers to provide ten-year warranties with all new products.
