The government must do more to educate people about some of the energy efficiency steps they can take to save money on fuel bills.
This is according to Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council, who stated that in order to bring many properties up to standard, large-scale investments will have to be made.
Individuals should be encouraged to spend any money they have set aside for home renovations on projects that will help cut their energy usage, he added.
"It is all very well improving your bathroom and your kitchen but there are certain energy efficiency things that you can do in achieving those objectives which will save you money on bills," Mr Leech said.
Earlier this month, the Department of Energy and Climate Change outlined some of the frameworks that will be put in place around the Green Deal to ensure homeowners who take advantage of the scheme are not ripped off when they make enhancements to their property.
