Famers 'seek security' after red diesel thefts

Farmers in parts of Essex have been looking to hire private security after a spate of thefts that has seen heavy machinery and red diesel stolen.

The Essex Echo reports that around £1.5 million worth of equipment and fuel has been taken from locations in the south of the county in past incidents.

One farmer who spoke to the newspaper explained how he had been targeted numerous times, with thieves starting by taking diesel, before escalating to a tractor and other machinery.

"Luckily, I've got good neighbours who are chipping in and allowing me to use their equipment, otherwise my crops wouldn't be ready in time," he said.

Therefore, a group of farmers has opted to bring in a private security firm to ensure their properties are safe.

Gary Jackson of Precreate Security said that his company has installed sensors and alarms and mobile response teams could be on site in minutes if these are tripped.

Earlier this month, farmers were advised to think carefully about the location of their oil tanks in order to deter thieves by making their fuel less accessible.
