Heating oil thefts 'have not gone up in Tayside'

Tayside Police has confirmed that the number of heating oil thefts has not gone up this year.

According to the force, the number of reported incidents during recent weeks is comparable to the amount recorded a year ago.

This, it stated, is despite the fact that the Tayside area has experienced a "severe cold spell" this winter.

Officers said the theft rate has also not been affected by the "added pressure of suppliers encountering weather-related difficulties in reaching customers".

Tayside Police added that heating oil thefts can be a problem at any time of the year, particularly in rural communities.

Residents were told not to be unduly concerned about the issue as thefts which have been reported so far have proved to be isolated incidents.

This comes after Michelle Mitchell of charity Age UK told the Daily Mail that such thefts could have severe consequences for older people at this time of year.
