People who are hoping to save money on fuel bills can do so in a number of cost-effective ways, one expert has claimed.

Sustainability and communications director of social enterprise Sustain, Gordon Miller, stated one of the most effective upgrades is insulation.

"Making sure that your home is properly insulated doesn't really cost a lot," he explained. "It costs only a couple of hundred pounds to make sure your attic is insulated."

According to Mr Miller, there are other benefits besides savings for a change such as this, including temperature control.

Environmentally-friendly residences will often retain heat better in the colder months, he commented, while also being cool in the summer due to superior build quality.

His comments followed an announcement by the Energy Technologies Institute, which revealed earlier this month that it is launching a £3 million project to improve the efficiency of homes across the UK.

The initiative is designed to help the country meet carbon emissions targets by 2050.
