Cutting heating bill costs may be more important for an increasing number of homeowners, as one expert has claimed public awareness of energy efficiency is growing.

Gordon Miller, sustainability and communications director of Sustain, stated individuals in the UK are "definitely switching on to it more".

His remarks followed the announcement of an upcoming European Union directive that will make it mandatory for properties' energy efficiency ratings to be published with any sales documents produced when a house is put on the market.

Commenting on the legislation, Mr Miller noted it will definitely be advantageous to those looking to invest in a home as they will have more information when making a decision.

"From a buyer's point of view, it has got to be a positive," he added.

However, the specialist suggested the law does have some drawbacks, including the fact it does not tell people how to make their residences more environmentally friendly.
