Norfolk Police issue heating oil theft warning

30 December 2009

Norfolk Police have issued a heating oil theft warning after a pensioner's home was targeted by thieves.

Local police are urging residents and businesses in Norfolk to be vigilant against the risk of heating oil theft after thieves stole around 700 litres of fuel from the home of a 97-year-old woman living in Bradenham.

Speaking to the Eastern Daily Press, Betty Branch said she is worried the remaining fuel in her oil tank may not last until her next delivery.

Commenting after the theft, a spokesperson from Norfolk Police said the constabulary witnessed a marked increase in heating oil thefts in January 2009 and is anticipating a similar trend next month.

"We would therefore urge homeowners to ensure they take the necessary measures to secure their tanks. Rural properties where tanks are out of sight can be particularly vulnerable," the spokesperson explained.

Elsewhere in the county, North Norfolk News also reported earlier this month that thieves stole around £100 worth of heating oil from a home in Alymerton, near Cromer.
