What are Heating Oil Additives For?
Heating oil additives are something of a mystery to many people and often misunderstood. Some people believe that they will magically transform the fuel and give you more energy from the oil when you burn it. In fact, oil additives do not change the heating energy in the oil but regular use can improve the efficiency of heat transfer and save wear and tear on the components in your oil-fired boiler or oil-fired cooker, saving you money on expensive repairs and call out charges in the long-term. BoilerJuice sell two types of heating oil additive, BoilerMax and CookerMax.
BoilerMax
Most home heating boilers work by pumping oil through a nozzle or jet to vaporise it. The resulting spray of oil and air mixture is burnt, heat is transferred from the flame to the water via a heat exchanger.
An oil additive, like Boilermax, works on the oil in a number of different ways which prevent or slow down the degradation of your boiler’s parts or of the oil itself. BoilerMax is a carefully engineered cocktail of chemicals which do various jobs:
- antioxidents and metal deactivators, – to keep the oil from degrading when stored in the tank.
- lubricants – to prevent the mechanical wear of parts of the boiler
- chemicals to prevent the build up of soot and deposits from the burner, which can inhibit heat transfer to the water.
- detergents, dispersants and corrosion inhibitors to prevent the build up of rust and sludge in your oil tank
Although oil additives can make your boiler run more efficiently, we do not recommend however, that you use these additives to extend the time between boiler servicing. You should always have your boiler serviced as per the manufacturer’s instructions. (Usually every 12 months.) Your can even get a fragranced version of BoilerMax if you don’t like the smell of oil.
CookerMax
If you have an Aga, you will know that it is great piece of equipment, but may have experienced a problem with the burner clogging with soot. Concern for the environment, has meant that over the years, the level of sulphur in heating oil has been reduced. This has had the unintended effect that the vapour oil burners in some Agas and oil-fired cookers can be become clogged with soot, leading to reliability problems. If you needed to call out the engineer to fix your Aga each time it happens, it could be a costly problem. CookerMax (like Exocet) has been specifically designed to help prevent these problems.
BoilerJuice’s heating oil additives conform to British Standard BS 2869C2 so do not require you to consult your heating oil engineer before use. What are you waiting for? Visit the BoilerJuice shop and try it out. You can also find other useful oil accessories, such as tank locks and watchman Sonic oil level gauges.
