New to heating oil? Not sure what to do?

Help!!! After years of piped gas or electricity you’ve moved house – and suddenly you’re faced with an oil tank at the bottom of the garden and a mountain of questions to go with it!

What exactly is home heating oil? How much oil will I need? Where do I get home heating oil? How much oil will I need and what’s the minimum order? How much will my heating oil cost? How can I get more from my heating oil? How will I know when I’m running low on oil? How often will my boiler need servicing? Could someone steal my heating oil?

Hopefully as the UK’s No1 website for heating oil, BoilerJuice can answer some of those questions!

What is domestic heating oil?

Home heating oil is usually kerosene which is a clear, thin liquid extracted by distilling crude oil. It’s the cheapest form of heating oil which is why most people use it and why BoilerJuice sell it. In fact we offer some of the cheapest kerosene prices in the UK!

How do I get home heating oil and how much will I need?

First, check the kind of fuel used in your system and the capacity of your tank. Then get a quote, place your order and pay for your home heating oil on the BoilerJuice website. Oil is delivered to your property (our drivers fill up your tank for you). You don’t even have to be there if it’s easy to get access.

What’s the minimum I can order?

The minimum amount of home heating oil you can order is 500 litres and the maximum is 100,000 litres – but most customers order between 1,000 and 2,000 litres at any one time.

How much will my heating oil cost?

If you’re used to paying for gas or electricity by direct debit, then the world of home heating oil can seem baffling – but it’s actually quite simple. You just get a quote, order and pay. Then our delivery drivers top up your tank.

Heating Oil Prices vary according to what crude oil is doing on the wider market (a bit like petrol or diesel) – but, historically, prices tend to be lower in the summer months, so that can be the best time to top up on oil. You can check what current oil prices are doing on the BoilerJuice website. And you’ll be glad to hear that VAT on home heating oil is only 5%!

How can I get more from my heating oil?

Pour a bottle of BoilerMax heating oil additive into your tank! It’s designed to improve boiler efficiency, take care of tank sludge, reduce maintenance & shutdowns, stabilise the fuel AND promote a greener, cleaner burn – so it more than pays for itself!

How will I know when I’m running low on oil?

It’s a good idea to fit a remote monitor so you can check when oil levels are getting low. Our Watchman Sonic is a remote wireless monitor that just plugs into a 3-pin socket, so you can check oil levels without leaving your sofa!

What about boiler servicing?

Your oil-fired boiler will need servicing just like any other kind of boiler to make sure it’s safe and using fuel efficiently – and BoilerJuice offer great value servicing from our team of friendly, experienced OFTEC registered engineers. And you don’t pay a penny until your service is completed!

Could someone steal my heating oil?

Put simply, yes they could. But there are inexpensive, simple measures you can take to make sure they don’t. For only £66.55 you can buy a BoilerJuice Tank Lock. It’s easy to install (you don’t need an engineer).

  1. Help Please, my boiler keeps going to lock out, an engineer looked at my system for ages trying to resolve the problem he replaced the pump as when worked for a brief spell the pump pressure kept fluctuating, that hasn’t helped as it keeps continuing to lock out even with the new pump. He then looked at the tank I have quarter of a tank of oil, he checked the gravity flow just as it enters the house and stated there is not enough pressure so I would need to raise my tank or add more oil as the pump is struggling to draw it in. As I say I have quarter of a tank and I have run it dry before so gravity wasn’t an issue then, why is it now??? If after adding oil it still locks out what next?? Many thanks in anticipation of some ideas…

  2. There should not be an oil smell in or around the boiler, but sometimes they do smell as dust around it burns onto hot surfaces. When we bought our house we found that a number of compression couplings were not tightened up right, resulting in years of oil leaking into the floorboards. Oh joy! Check out the oil feed pipe with tissue paper – held against the light you will soon spot where oil may originate from. Best of luck

  3. Hello, I am looking to buy a house with an oil boiler. However there appears to be an oil smell in the kitchen where the boiler is. Is this normal or does it indicate a problem that could be solved by replacing the boiler or getting it serviced? The rest of the house is quite run down. Many thanks in advance, Liz haygreen

  4. We have a Titan R1225 tank. This is is a strangely shaped entity, holes and dimples in the construction.

Does anyone know of a chart which will convert the visible amount of oil shown in the viewing tube to a an amount of litres?

    Cheers
