What has your household done to reduce its carbon footprint?

There are many things we can do now to help reduce our impact on the environment, such as using low energy light bulbs, recycling waste, composting, using public transport or car-sharing. But not everyone is fully aware of this, and changing our lifestyles to be more sustainable is likely to take some time.

  • Are these issues important to the people in your household?
  • What changes have you made to help?
  • What have been the environmental, personal, or financial benefits of these changes?
  • Have you got any tips for other BoilerJuice members?

Thank you for your comments!

Cut down heating oil puchases to minimum 500ltrs last year. This winter have not used the central heating at all due to running costs, use the wood burning stove instead (renewable timber sources). Labour intensive but no money needed and gives more pleasure and helps to keep me fit.

I like my woodburner too, though wouldn't be without CH as well. Wood warms you 3 times over - once when you cut it up, second when you lug it indoors and finally when you bask before your roaring stove. Cheers!

Great to use public transport if it exists where you live. That lot up at Westminster only think in terms of cities and suburbia. They want to wake up and realise there's a whole big world outside called the countryside with roads that have never seen a bus, thank God!

Last winter we installed a wood burning stove, best thing we ever did as not only does it help with our carbon footprint nothing beats a real flame during our miserables winters.
