Petition to remove 5% fuel duty for OAPs & Disabled Oil users - C'mon Gordon!

Below is a copy of the recent press release issued by BoilerJuice to the national press in an attempt to try and make a difference to the tens of thousands of old age pensioners struggling to heat their homes. We believe the government should remove the duty for OAPs, currently 5% paid by all home owners on fuel, especially given the current high prices we are paying for heating oil.

Whilst we appreciate a 5% reduction on heating oil isn't a huge discount, if you're an OAP living on just over £100 a week it really will make a difference. The UK currently has 2.2 million pensioners living in poverty.

This blog is to hear your thoughts and views on the subject before we hope you sign and support the petition. You never know - we could make a difference.

Government must stop the freeze for OAPs

~ heating oil fuel duty must be scrapped for pensioners, petitions BoilerJuice.com ~

The Government needs to drop the fuel duty on home heating oil for the elderly – or continue to put our most vulnerable people at risk, according to BoilerJuice.com. The web-based oil buying company is calling for action to help elderly oil users keep warm in the face of rising oil costs.

BoilerJuice.com has launched a petition at their website and enabling people to lobby for the five per cent fuel duty on home heating oil to be repaid to pensioners who struggle to heat their homes. It has also created a forum for discussion on its blog to enable older people to share tips to reduce costs. Fuel duty currently stands at five per cent, which, at current oil prices, adds £20 to the bill every time a pensioner fills up a 1000 litre oil tank.

“Five per cent isn’t much to the Government,” said Paul Ward, director at BoilerJuice.com. “However, to an elderly person struggling to pay their bills on a fixed income, it equates to heating their home for an extra couple of weeks, or having the cash to turn the heating up a degree or two. With cold weather setting in, this could make a major difference to the number of cold-related deaths this year.”

1.5 million households in the UK use home heating oil to heat their homes. Based mainly in rural communities, many oil users are older people.

“We estimate that cutting the fuel duty on home heating oil for pensioners would benefit tens of thousands of older people who would otherwise be at risk from cold-related illnesses,” said Ward. “The Government should address the needs of this group, taking direct action to prevent unnecessary deaths in 2008 and beyond.”

Whilst I appreciate the situation of some OAP's why should it be just them, I am also an oil user and i'm going to struggle this winter, some OAP's are better of then me and they get a heating allowence already from the goverment.
The goverment needs to do something, it is just world speculation and the demand China and the US is putting on supplies that drives the price up.
Pensioners aren't the only ones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We want to move house but the fact that we have oil for heating and hot water is going to make it harder to sell our house, what with that and the other factors due to mortgages etc guess we will have to stay put in a four bedroom house when we only need two-three bed bungalow.
The tax might not seem high at 5% but added to already high oil prices it calculates to a large amount per year, and like food it is a necessity.

I still don't understand why when I was paying abount 20p litre for heating oil, petrol was roughly 80p. This equates to 25% of the cost of car fuel (at the time), now it's about 61p for heating oil and 1.15 for petrol i.e 53%. Why if crude oil increases the same for everyone does it appear that heating oil is going up twice as fast?

The £200 fuel allowance for pensioners is not worth a damn if the minimum you can get is 500 litres which cost £300 plus.....lower the minimum order quantity please!!!

I won't be able to get oil either, I only have it on for 30 minutes a day to heat the water.

I am getting a 20 liter oil drum every week added in to the tank, it gets delivered to my house and put in to the tank all for £12.50 a drum....better than shelling out a crippling £309.

At least this way my oil does not run out, by the time the winter arrives my tank will be at least half full.

please also remember the single parents and poorer people that also have problems in budgeting for their heat source. unlike the elderly we do not get warm weather payments.there are also people that work and have to do many extra hours to fund their heating. so i say to the goverment look many of us have stopped going out because we can't afford it,(petrol)food so we are buying rubbish or not very much otf the good stuff, and we are all having to find other ways of keeping warm. but the government don't have to worry as we pay for their lifestyle!! something needs to be done and fast before we have people dying of starvation and the cold, through not being able to feed and keep themselves warm. back to the olden days then where the wife didn't eat so that the husband had good food so he could do his job.!!! there is no need for things to cost this much and instead of giving to other countries, lets be selfish for once and fund our people,

Government should definitely reduce VAT until oil prices level out - if they ever do again. The only winners are the government while pensioners and young families are having a tough time meeting bills for oil.

I am the mother of a disabled teen with mobility problems and arthritis. I cannot afford heating this year. I havent had hot water in my house since oil was installed in 2004 as I couldnt afford the oil to run it. I have a fireplace in my lounge and come winter this will be my sole form of heating. My disabled son will have to move from his bedroom to the lounge to sleep. 2 years ago my 1000 litres of oil cost £247 and I struggled to pay that. I had to get a grant last year to cover my oil bill of £400 now with the price of oil going up daily my oil today would cost £650. Tomorrow it will be probably nearer to £700. So we will have no heating this winter.

So let me ask you - why is it the elderly alone who should have this discount? Do we not deserve a discount too?
