There are two main types of kerosene home heating oil available for sale in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The cheapest oil is standard kerosene 28 (BS 2869C2) and then there is premium kerosene 28 oil which contains additional additives to help improve the fuel quality.
The the cheapest oil for home heating is standard Kerosene 28 and is made to BS 2869C2 specification, over the past few years there have been many articles discussing the change in home heating oil (kerosene) quality and the increase in reported field problems with boilers. There is much industry speculation as to the root causes of these problems, but one key factor emerging is that a more variable fuel quality is being caused by efforts to comply with lower fuel sulphur levels.
The thermal efficiency of boilers depends on the efficiency of the combustion process and how efficient is the transfer of heat from combustion gases to the hot water and central heating systems via the heat exchanger. Build-up of deposits on heat exchanger surfaces between services inhibits heat transfer and lowers the thermal efficiency of boilers. This impacts on the temperature and composition of gases exiting boiler flues and is associated with a lowering of combustion efficiency as measured by flue gas analysers.
The results of flue gas analyses taken before and after servicing showed combustion efficiency of boilers running on premium kerosene averaged higher than those running on the cheapest oil (regular kerosene 28).
Premium Heating Oil
Our premium heating oil product BoilerMax and CookerMax have been formulated to be added to standard Kerosene 28 and therefore heating oil treated with our premium additive meet the same BS 2869C2 specification as the cheapest oil but with some added benefits to help combat tank sludge and the effects of lower sulphur content.
BoilerMax treated heating oil (for regular oil fired boilers):
The BoilerMax additive reduces deposit build-up; improves system efficiency; inhibits sludge formation; stabilises the fuel; avoids operating problems and for a greener, cleaner burn.
CookerMax treated heating oil (for AGAs):
The CookerMax additive reduces deposit build-up; improves system efficiency; inhibits sludge formation; stabilises the fuel and avoids operating problems.
